PRDN - Natural Disasters Warning and Mitigation

Summary Objectives

The Lower Mekong countries are prone to natural disasters, especially typhoons and severe floods. All donors’ missions have identified the data collection and warning systems as being obsolete, and local response to floods is often inadequate for lack of flood modelling. The strategy is to build up local expertise in these areas with the help of European institutions which have a long experience in watershed basin management, automatic data collection, early warning systems, flood modelling and which are eager to share state of the art technologies and software.

This first component « get in touch and keep in touch activities » aims at identifying and networking organisations in order to prepare transfer of European technology and guidelines for adapting them to the Southeast Asia countries geographic, climatic and institutional environment. This will be achieved through a web-forum fed by E-papers from the project partners and open to all experts. This will be followed by a study tour in Europe and a final seminar in Hanoi will draw the conclusions and define possible next component.
