The Cities Department initiates, co-ordinates and implements action to
mobilize members' knowhow on development, stimulate the generation and
exchange of knowledge between countries of the north and south, and support
members' international activities.
The Department's action is usually undertaken in partnership with other
public or private organizations operating at local, national or international
level and centres around:
 the production
of knowledge: studies, thematic discussion groups, expertise missions;
capacity-building:
training, research programs, seminars;
facilitating
networks and partnerships;
disseminating
knowledge: seminars, publications.
Its permanent activities include running the "Villes
en Développement" Documentation and Information Centre
and the French "Cities Alliance"
Committee. It also manages the ALMWLA
World Local Authorities database.
