The Roads Department supports France's international road activities, in collaboration with international and regional bodies. It provides aid for activities dedicated to the community by pooling members' knowhow in the interests of development, implements cooperation programs with Administrations of third countries and supports members' international activities.

The Department's activities include:

support for reflection and discussion of development policies: road management, maintenance, financing and marketing, technological exchanges and development;
implementing studies and programs: road network performance monitoring, road fund operation, management training, measures to strengthen road administrations;
setting up partnerships and facilitating networks of Road Managers from Central Europe, Africa and the Maghreb, assistance for commissions and committees of the World Road Association (PIARC).

Isted has created Cesroute, an advanced international training program on roads, which it organizes. It is a partner of the Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP).
