Responsible tourism : mobilizing know-how

As there are soon to be 760 million tourists, and one billion by 2010, tourism is considered to be one of the world’s largest “industries”. France is the country in the world which receives the most of this huge and varied movement of people. It offers tourists a wealth of cultural, heritage and landscape resources and possesses good infrastructure. It also has exceptional know-how which has helped to build French tourism supply.

But paradoxically, our tourism engineering has little presence at international level. This is what prompted me to ask ISTED, as a result of its expertise in the area of transport, planning and publicprivate partnerships, to lead a multidisciplinary working group. This group brought together representatives of the tourism engineering professions, but also those of transport, regional planning, infrastructure, local development, architecture and urban planning. Its aim was to develop an enriched and extended offer which is able to provide “turnkey” solutions and that can be promoted at international level.

The working group’s activities come under the international strategic policies of the Tourism Directorate which aim to better position our operators with regard to the European Commission and multilateral financiers. A booklet setting out the recommendations of the working group is soon to be published and disseminated to all our services abroad, embassies and economic missions, and to the relevant donors. To assist the greater presence of French tourism engineering in the world, the Tourism Directorate, in partnership with ODIT-France, will attempt to encourage the mobilization of the private sector; attend to the promotion of its know-how; encourage French engineering to engage in a strategy of alliance with peripheral professions, giving access to networks of consultants and clients.

  • Feature: Promoting French know-how in the area of tourism engineering at international level France, which is the world’s principal tourist destination, benefits from a range of resources– history, heritage, culture, gastronomy, natural sites, etc.
However, at international level, its tourism engineering does not have the presence that it merits. It is for this reason that the Tourism Directorate decided to develop a multi-expertise comprehensive offer.
